Just like we all drew it up.

It is here I will make a confession: I had hunch that the St. Louis Cardinals were going someone win a top-6 draft pick this lottery. The rest of the writers can confirm this: at around 4:15pm I sent a message asking someone to write up a post in the unlikely even the Cardinals won a top-6 pick because I was going to be busy. I almost didn't send it — it probably wouldn't come up — but what if it did? I couldn't tell you why I had this hunch, but it was just a feeling I had that I couldn't ignore. It was why I kept writing about the odds and made sure to mention when the lottery would be. Maybe I just manifested it into being.

Because the odds were slim, folks. There was a less than 1% chance the Cardinals would get the number one pick and I think after running the numbers — without knowing exactly how they assign the numbers for this whole lottery thing and just looking at it like a raffle — that because the Mariners, who had an even smaller number of chances in the lottery, won the fourth pick, the odds the Cardinals would get a top 6 pick after that actually fell even lower. I am looking at around 0.4% odds for that number 5 pick. Regardless of how the figure this, I feel pretty comfortable telling you all that the odds of Cardinals winning a top-six pick were real low. Here are the top 6 in order:

  1. Washington Nationals
  2. Los Angeles Angels
  3. Seattle Mariners
  4. Colorado Rockies
  5. St. Louis Cardinals
  6. Pittsburgh Pirates

For the first time since 1998 when the Cardinals selected J.D. Drew with the fifth overall pick in the draft the Cardinals will have a pick in the top five. Time to get researching who their options are!
