Yankees acquire JD Davis in trade with Athletics

The New York Yankees and the Oakland Athletics have agreed to a trade. The A’s are sending J.D. Davis and cash to the Big Apple, per the Yankees’ social media account. The Athletics are getting infielder Jordan Groshans in return.

The move comes as the Yankees are in a bit of turmoil. Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo are out hurt, and the team’s top farm prospect Jasson Dominguez is also banged up. The Athletics, meanwhile, are having a rough season as the team gets ready to leave the Bay for Las Vegas.

Davis played in New York with the Mets for four seasons. He is expected to join the Bronx Bombers on Tuesday, per the New York Post.

J.D. Davis is a veteran, who has played with the A’s for less than one full season. He joined the Athletics in 2024, after playing with the San Francisco Giants for two seasons. This year, the infielder is batting .236 with four home runs. He also has batted in five runs, with 123 total at-bats.

The infielder just wasn’t finding rhythm in Oakland. He had a career-high in RBIs last year, playing with the Giants. He finished the 2023 campaign with 69 runs batted in, to go with 119 hits. He’s been well below that level of production this year, with just five runs batted in in nearly three months of play. Oakland had essentially given up on him, but the veteran is getting another shot. The Yankees are going to rely on Davis to help them produce some offense with Rizzo and Stanton out of the lineup.

Davis is one of two new infielders joining the team. New York is bringing Oswald Peraza from their Triple-A club to take Stanton’s place on the roster. Peraza is not expected to play too long with the team, and it seems Davis will fill the void more permanently. The veteran will provide some experienced leadership in the clubhouse. He has played MLB baseball since 2017, when he was a member of the Houston Astros. In his career, Davis has slashed .259 with more than 630 total games played.

The Yankees are 52-27 on the season, good for first in the American League East. The team has lost six of their last 10 games. New York has a game Sunday against the Atlanta Braves. It is ongoing at time of writing.

What Oakland is getting in Groshans

Oakland’s season is heading in the opposite direction. The A’s are a lowly 29-50 on the year, and the team’s eventual offseason move to Las Vegas has been getting more attention than the team’s play.

The A’s are clearly trying to build for the future, and believes Groshans can be a part of it. The infielder hasn’t played in the MLB since the 2022 season, with the Miami Marlins. He had a .262 average with the Marlins, to go with 16 hits over 17 games played. He is hitting .232 this season playing in the minor leagues, with one home run and 15 runs batted in.

Oakland has a game Sunday against the Minnesota Twins.
