What If Lex Luger Beat Yokozuna At WrestleMania 10? | Question Of The Day

Welcome to another eWrestlingNews Question of the Day!
31 years ago today, WrestleMania X took place at Madison Square Garden. As a result of the 1994 Royal Rumble’s finish, both Bret Hart and Lex Luger were declared the next challengers for Yokozuna’s WWF Championship, setting up a scenario where Luger faced Yokozuna first, and the winner would face Hart later on. As it went down, Luger came up short, but The Hitman was able to win the title in the grand finale of the night.
But with Lex Luger going into the WWE Hall of Fame this year, it has me thinking about what would have happened if things had gone down the opposite way.
My question for you today is “How would you have booked Lex Luger’s WWF Championship reign if he had defeated Yokozuna at WrestleMania X?”
Remember to answer with your response in the comments below.
As far as my answer…
Let’s get this out of the way and say that I wouldn’t have preferred this, as Bret Hart’s my third favorite of all time and Lex Luger doesn’t even crack the top 25—even though I fully think he should have beaten Yokozuna at SummerSlam 1993 and won the title then. But I’m not booking this as if he did it in 93, so I’m working with the April 1994 roster, essentially.
That means I’m not working with much, because I think Luger would’ve stayed babyface, so that rules out some big names like The Undertaker, Razor Ramon, British Bulldog, and even Bret Hart again. Luger would work better as a face-on-heel champion, rather than trying to out-babyface someone more popular.
Some people here and there would just be side feuds, like I can’t imagine dedicating a big program to Rick Martel at that point, nor Hakushi.
I’d likely give him Adam Bomb as a first opponent before he turned face. If not Adam Bomb, Bam Bam Bigelow or Crush would have been an obvious “tough task” type of opponent for Luger to show off his strength. Eventually, a feud with Jerry “The King” Lawler would have spiced things up, as it would have a totally different dynamic. Jeff Jarrett also would have made sense for a feud, as he was a top heel.
Primarily, Shawn Michaels would have been a MAJOR feud for him, but I don’t think Vince McMahon was ready to put the belt on HBK back then, so I’m not going to fantasy book that. Instead, I think the next champion would have come down to either skipping straight to Diesel (rather than doing the Bob Backlund win over Bret Hart and then immediate transition to Diesel), or it would have been Owen Hart who beat Luger.
Realistically speaking, as much as I would have pitched that Owen beats Luger, Bret beats Owen, and the belt isn’t on Diesel in November, I think instead, we would have seen a heel Diesel beat Luger sometime around SummerSlam. Then, Diesel would have been getting cheered enough that he would have turned babyface, putting us back on the same timeline of fighting Michaels at WrestleMania 11. Luger would have been doing something more prominent instead of teaming with British Bulldog, and maybe would have been in that Owen Hart feud at that point instead, or fighting Jeff Jarrett, who also would have made a good opponent in a Lawler/Owen/Michaels kind of way during his title reign. Take your pick on whichever ones he’d feud with from Mania to SummerSlam, and whoever was left over and not busy feuding with someone else is who he’d be paired with. Maybe he even still would have teamed with Bulldog and fought Owen Hart and Jeff Jarrett, though, or something along those lines. But at least he’d have been a former world champion.
The downside to that is taking a title reign away from Bret, so I still don’t think I’d want to change the past and go with this timeline instead, but given how it could have ended in a similar way, maybe with a few tweaks, it could have been just as good, if not better.
I still love the ending of WrestleMania 10 with Bret and Owen too much to not want that to be preserved, though.
