Yankees Sign Paul Goldschmidt: Community Poll

The fans are divided on the Paul Goldschmidt deal.
When the Yankees swung a deal with the Cubs for Cody Bellinger earlier this week, the general consensus was that the team needed to add another bat — preferably one who could play either first base or one of the three outfield positions. Once Christian Walker, the player considered to be the top first baseman available on the market, signed a deal with the Houston Astros, it seemed just a matter of time before the Bombers came to terms with one of the numerous available first basemen.
Well, yesterday afternoon, they finally struck, signing veteran Paul Goldschmidt to a one-year deal.
Paul Goldschmidt will sign a 1-year deal with the Yankees. The 37-year old has won 4 Gold Gloves and was the 2022 MVP. While he had a .716 OPS with 22 HRs & 65 RBI last year, he had solid numbers vs LHP and also performed better in the second half. Savvy, short-term signing.

Not surprisingly, this move seemed to be a bit divisive with the fans — as of last night, the news post announcing the signing here at PSA had almost 500 comments, a massive amount for the offseason. Many were not thrilled with the team opting to go with an aging vet at the position, with some comparing it to the Josh Donaldson trade prior to the 2022 season.
Others highlighted the fact that the Yankees literally had the worst offensive production from the first base position last year, and that even league average would be a three-win improvement.
One of the biggest reasons that readers praised the move was because it's a one-year deal, meaning that the move doesn't hamper the team's ability to pursue Kyle Tucker or Vladimir Guerrero Jr. next winter.
After a while, the conversation turned to the offseason as a whole. For the most part, at this time of winter, it's hard to get a consistent, clear vibe from a team's fanbase. Generally speaking, the vibe around the move seemed to be "Signing Goldschmidt, like every other move, has made absolute sense and puts the team in a better spot than they were when the offseason began, but it isn't exciting."
If there's one thing helping people to keep the faith, it's that the rest of the American League seems weak, with the Astros and Guardians shipping out important players (Tucker, Josh Naylor) and the Orioles spending minimal money.
So, once again, I turn it back to you all. Now that we've had some time to ponder the move, how do you feel about the Paul Goldschmidt signing? Vote in our poll, and let us know in the comments' section below!
