The United States lost its second game of the 2024 Copa America tournament on Thursday, falling 2-1 in a physical matchup against Panama.

The USMNT were on their heels early after a controversial red card was given to American Tim Weah.

The team then played with 10 men for most of the match, disrupting their strategy and formation against an eager opponent.

Weah's red card set the tone for the game, which ended with a player being sent off on each side and multiple bookings.

After the game, Weah and other members of the USMNT suffered racial abuse online.

The U.S. Soccer Federation condemned that abuse on Thursday night in a statement.

"There is absolutely no place in the game for such hateful and discriminatory behavior," said the USSF.

"These actions are not only unacceptable but but also contrary to the values of respect and inclusivity that we uphold as an organization."

The federation said that it would offer mental support for any player that needs it, and it has also reported the abuse to CONMEBOL - the South American soccer organization that runs the Copa America event.

After the game, Weah issued an apology for losing his composure and picking up the red card.

"No matter what, I will always fight for my team and my country till the day I am no longer needed or capable to," said Weah, who plays for Juventus in Italy.

"I sincerely apologize to everyone. My love for this team goes beyond just football and I am so sad and angry at myself for putting my brothers through what they went through tonight."

The United States will face Group C leaders Uruguay in their final group game on Monday in Kansas City.

They'll need a better result than Panama in their game against Bolivia in order to advance to the knockout stage.
