On the same day LeBron James agreed to an extension, Bronny James signed his rookie contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Last week's No. 55 pick reportedly signed a four-year, $7.9 million deal with a team option in 2027-28. Those who believe Bronny only got drafted because of his last name were quick to claim the Lakers gave the 19-year-old preferential treatment.

Fans on social media noted that four of the previous five No. 55 selections signed non-guaranteed two-way contracts. The exception, Gui Santos, signed a three-year, $5.1 million contract with $75,000 guaranteed.

However, an NBA writer cautioned people from crying "nepotism" about Bronny's contract.

The Athletic's Sam Vecenie cited three players picked around the same range last year who received a similar deal. Toumani Camara (No. 52), Trayce Jackson-Davis (No. 57), and Chris Livingston (No. 58) each signed a four-year, $7.6 million contract with over $3 million guaranteed.

"Bronny's contract is not out of line with other picks in the 50s for teams looking to save money," Vecenie wrote.

The Lakers weren't giving a bonus to the James family as much as managing their bloated salary cap. ESPN insider Bobby Marks noted that James' contract is "the standard second round pick exception."

"It's the same length in years that three picks in the 50's signed for last year," Marks said. "The second round pick exception does not apply against the cap until July 31."

At this point, some critics may have still objected to Bronny receiving $1. No matter how he got the chance, the guard will look to justify his NBA opportunity.
