On Thursday afternoon former USC star quarterback Matt Leinart shared what he thought would be an innocent photo of his Fourth of July celebration.

Leinart posted a photo with longtime United States senator Ted Cruz. "Happy 4th," the message on X, formerly Twitter, said.

It didn't take long for fans to start either aligning themselves with Leinart's apparent political endorsement or distancing themselves from him.

"Whatever you are supporting, Ted Cruz will make it lose," one fan joked.

"Shocked he's spending July 4th in America," offered another.

"Why did his wife let him emerge wearing that?" questioned a third.

Here's the photo of the two.

Perhaps the endorsement should come as a complete surprise given Leinart's deleted tweets about Los Angeles closing restaurants during COVID.

"LA just closed all dining INDOOR/OUTDOOR for 3 weeks? Can't wait to move out of this awful place. Ridiculous," Leinart tweeted at the time. "People going to lose their jobs again. Small business shutting down."

After he was called out for his opinion on social media, Leinart fired back at "lefties."

"I wear a mask," he said. "I go to the grocery store. I cook my own food. I have a wife and kids. My dad is high risk and we are careful. You all are too much! Stop being bullies!"
