Major League Baseball is saddened by the death of a legendary Atlanta Braves star on Sunday.
One of the best hitters in Atlanta Braves history has passed away. Rico Carty, who played for the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves from 1963-67 and again in 1969, '70 and '72, died at 85 years old. He reportedly passed away from health complications. Carty is a member of the Atlanta Braves Hall of Fame. He led the NL in batting in 1970 and was an All-Star outfielder.
"With a heart broken the Carty family regrets to inform all of our relatives, friends, and acquaintances that our father Mr. Ricardo Adolfo Jacobo Carty (Rico Carty) lost the battle last night. He was a warrior until his last breath," his family announced in a statement.
Major League Baseball is deeply saddened by his passing on Sunday afternoon.
MLB released a lengthy statement on his passing on Sunday afternoon:
"We are saddened by the passing of 15-year MLB veteran Rico Carty. Carty spent 8 of his 15 years with the Braves. In his memorable 1970 season, Carty hit .366 to win the NL batting crown. It is still the highest mark in Braves modern-era franchise history. His popularity was so great, Carty earned a nod to the 1970 All-Star Game as a write-in candidate and joined Hank Aaron and Willie Mays in the starting outfield. The Dominican Republic native is a member of the Braves Hall of Fame, as well as the Caribbean Baseball and Latino Baseball Halls of Fame. He was 85," Major League Baseball said.
