Meet The Top 5 Richest Owners In The NFL (1:24)

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones dropped some bombshell news late on Friday night. After running a questionable search, he hired Brian Schottenheimer as the team's new head coach.

The Cowboys didn't exactly have a ton of prominent candidates on their radar. They were briefly linked to Deion Sanders, but that never felt like a realistic option. Leslie Frazier, Kellen Moore and Robert Saleh were certainly in contention, but Jones was clearly impressed with Schottenheimer. The two sides met twice this week. Prior to the second interview, Schottenheimer became the odds-on favorite to win the job.

Schottenheimer, 51, has a ton of experience coaching in the NFL. He worked for the Kansas City Chiefs in 1998, San Diego Chargers from 2002-2005, New York Jets from 2006-2011, Seattle Seahawks from 2018-2020, and Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021. It wasn't until 2022 that he joined "America's Team" as an analyst. One year later, he was promoted to offensive coordinator.

Fast forward to January 2025, and Schottenheimer is officially the 10th head coach in the history of the Cowboys.

The fans in Dallas may not approve of this decision, but Jones sounds amped up about Schottenheimer's future.

"Brian Schottenheimer is known as a career assistant," Jones told ESPN's Adam Schefter. "He ain't Brian no more. He is now known as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys."

Jones probably won't win over any fans with this statement, but that's OK. All that matters is winning. If Schottenheimer can do that, he'll be fine.

There'll be plenty of pressure on Schottenheimer as he enters his first stint as an NFL head coach. Hiring an experienced staff around him would alleviate some of that pressure.

According to reports, Schottenheimer could add former Chicago Bears coach Matt Eberflus to his staff. Nothing has been confirmed yet.

Schottenheimer, the son of former NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer, will be introduced to the media as the head coach of the Cowboys on Monday morning.
