What If Ted DiBiase Won At WrestleMania IV? | Question Of The Day

Welcome to another eWrestlingNews Question of the Day!
36 years ago today, WrestleMania IV took place, wherein Macho Man Randy Savage won a tournament to capture the vacated WWF Championship in a finale against “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase.
Imagine if it had gone the other way, though, and DiBiase had won the title that he tried to buy off Andre the Giant. How would his reign have gone down?
My question for you today is “When, and to whom, would you have booked Ted DiBiase to lose the WWF Championship after WrestleMania IV?”
Remember to answer with your response in the comments below.
As far as my answer…
I happen to love the Mega Powers concept, generally speaking, so even though I really wish DiBiase was a recognized world champion in WWE history, I think I’d have to find a way to come back around to doing Savage against Hulk Hogan at some point anyway.
With that in mind, there are two ways this could go, from my perspective. Either Hogan wins the title from DiBiase and faces Savage at WrestleMania as the champion in a reverse situation, or Savage beats DiBiase, eventually turns heel, and we get the same setup that we got before for WrestleMania V, but just in a much weaker fashion.
As you can tell by my designation of the two, the latter isn’t my favorite answer. I love Savage, and I’m glad he’s a two-time champion, so I wouldn’t want to get rid of that part of the legacy. This kind of makes it a no-win scenario, as even the idea of going from DiBiase to Hogan doesn’t work, because Hogan was off filming No Holds Barred, which is part of the reason why Savage was given the title in the first place. Fundamentally, it wouldn’t work to put the belt on Hogan if he wasn’t around.
The only way I could see that happening is if DiBiase feuded with Savage post-Mania to kill some time until Hogan would win it back from DiBiase later in the year, but even then, as interesting of a prospect as it would be to turn Hogan heel and have a babyface Savage beat him at WrestleMania V, that’d be too sudden of a turn. It wouldn’t work in that era.
As much as I wish I could go back in time and somehow have some influence to make some things happen like giving a world title run to Mr. Perfect and Bam Bam Bigelow to cut Hogan’s time short, or to put the belt on DiBiase in this case, I think it’s pretty much a situation where either The Million Dollar Man wins it at Mania and loses it soon after to Savage, rendering the whole change moot, or it just has to go down the way it did, out of fear of changing far too much of the timeline—and I’m someone who believes in the Butterfly Effect, theoretically.
More so, I wish DiBiase would have been maybe given a legitimate world title reign, where he heads into WrestleMania as the champion and uses his influence to set up a tournament where he’s not even in it until the finale, forcing his opponent to wrestle multiple matches. Effectively, he’d think that he’d be setting himself up for a guaranteed retention to easily beat a tired challenger, only for Savage to have the babyface aura to go through multiple people and still beat DiBiase for the grand finale. That way, I have my cake and I get to eat it, too.
