Following his successful UFC 309 title defense against Stipe Miocic, Jon Jones has begun negotiations with the promotion for his next fight.
Despite his recent comeback fight being highly controversial, Jon Jones reminded fans why he is considered the greatest fighter of all time, beating Stipe Miocic in the third round of their main event.
Following his first title defense as the heavyweight champion, ‘Bones’ remained adamant that he is unlikely to unify the title against interim champion, Tom Aspinall, despite the continuous calls from fans.
Israel Adesanya provides verdict on possible Jon Jones vs Tom Aspinall fight
Although the 37-year-old expressed his desire to instead fight Alex Pereira, UFC CEO Dana White claimed that he must fight the British champion.
With that, both Aspinall and Jones have since teased that they have begun negotiations for their next fight which has led fans to remain hopeful that we will get a unification fight.
Former UFC middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya, who previously had a short online feud with Jones, has given his verdict on the potential fight between Jones and Aspinall after White labeled it as ‘the biggest fight in heavyweight history’.
“That’s the fight that we all want to see. They’ve got to fight. I think, f*ck, (Jones) finds a way but Aspinall so far, the way he dispatched of (Sergei Pavlovich), oh my god, he’s fast,” Adesanya said on FLAGRANT Podcast.
“I met him and sat next to him at UFC 300, he and his dad, cool dudes, lovely guys as well, but he’s the same height as me if not an inch taller but thick. And I was like ‘F*ck, you’re a lot thicker than I would expect’, and the speed, that’s the thing that I’m like, ‘Okay that’s the danger’.
“But again, grappling he’s a black belt, Jon is (different) but, I don’t know man, they have to fight but if they don’t ever fight, we’ll never know because we had that with Jon and (Anderson) Silva, we had that with Silva and (Georges St-Pierre) so there are all these fights that we’ll never see,” Adesanya continued.
Rumors circulate regarding Israel Adesanya’s next fight
Following ‘The Last Stylebender’s’ title fight loss against Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 305, the former champion is taking some time away from the Octagon while he plans his next move.
Despite that, it was recently reported by Red Corner MMA, that the UFC is working on a fight between Adesanya and the number fifth-ranked 185lber, Nassourdine Imavov.
The Nigerian did recently tease that matchup on his Instagram, as he posted an image on his story of his watching Imavov’s fight against Jared Cannonier.
The fight is reportedly in the works to take place on the promotion’s return to Saudi Arabia on February 1, however, it is unknown whether this is being targeted as the main event.
