Review: A roadtest of the ECCO S-Three golf shoe

If you’re thinking about your golf shoes then something isn’t right.

My golf shoe collection is in double figures which reflects my inability to get the sizing and comfort levels right.

I generally struggle with sizing due to one foot being a size bigger than the other, otherwise some shoes aren’t suitable for wet weather and others are good for 18 holes but then play havoc if you’re looking to play 36 holes in a day.

The looks of others let them down, two are too heavy and clumpy and one pair has just fallen apart after less than a year.

The ECCO S-Three shoes are like nothing else, in a very good way.

If you ask most golfers who make the most comfortable golf shoes then anyone who has worn ECCO before will vouch for them.

There are many fantastic shoe brands out there now – FootJoy, who lead the way in popularity, and Under Armour are other notable and excellent additions – but, for comfort, ECCO rule the roost.

I’ve worn the S-Three shoes for the past 10 rounds and I haven’t given them a second’s thought other than how comfortable and unobtrusive they are. Generally, by the time I’m on about the 15th, something won’t be right but these are good for any amount of golf in a day.

Are they genuinely waterproof?

Playing a lot of golf in the UK this is an absolute must. The S-Three offer Gore-Tex technology and are 100 per cent waterproof. Many shoes might make the claim to keep your feet dry but I can guarantee, having trudged up more than enough wet rough, that your feet will be as dry as they started. Many shoes are waterproof but there might be the odd wet patch but these keep out all the wet. And, on the odd occasion when the sun has been out, they are highly breathable.

What is the tech?

These came out in 2020 and they feature something called Zonal Fluidform Technology, which creates a moulded midsole with three distinct zones of softness. The heel of the midsole is engineered for medium softness to ensure cushioning and comfort, the central part has higher levels of rigidity to deliver lateral stability and the front is the softest for comfort. The hybrid outsole design provides more than 100 traction bars and 800 traction angles for excellent grip in all playing conditions and, for a shoe that is so comfortable, they are also so stable throughout the swing. Again, you don’t give them any thought when throwing yourself at a driver and they feel like they move with you in the swing rather than being planted like some shoes that offer similar stability.

What are the looks like?

For a company who led the way in golfing ‘street shoes’ these would probably sit more in the golf side of things rather than wearing them away from the course. But they’re still stylishly simple in appearance with some very neat detailing and there are a variety of colours to suit everyone, male or female.

What else to mention?

The S-Three have removable inlay soles to help with any adjustments. These offer another level of comfort while also ensuring that you get your sizing right. Also, the laces never come undone and help fit the shoe as snugly as possible.
