Former Dodgers Catcher Designated for Assignment by NL Squad

Austin Wynns, a journeyman MLB catcher who had a brief stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023, has been designated for assignment by the Cincinnati Reds.
He was DFA’d on Sunday without playing a game at the MLB level this season.
Wynns, 33, was drafted in the 10th round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Baltimore Orioles. The San Diego native debuted with Baltimore in 2018, and played parts of three seasons with the Orioles through 2021. Then, he spent the 2022 season with the San Francisco Giants, before bouncing around the National League West in 2023. He spent time with the Giants, Dodgers, and Colorado Rockies.
Wynns is a career .226 hitter in 231 games with 13 home runs, 61 RBIs, and an OPS of .597. With the Dodgers, he appeared in five games, going 2-for-11 (.182) with two runs batted in. His brief stint in Los Angeles was because of a Will Smith injury.
Wynns will now head to waivers, where he’ll hope to find his next team. He’s a solid backup catcher, but hasn’t proven to be much more than that at the MLB level. His best offensive season came in 2022, when he slashed .259/.313/.358 with three home runs, 21 RBIs, and an OPS of .671 in 65 games.
In 30 games at Triple-A this year, Wynns slashed .252/.310/.408 with four home runs, 17 RBIs, and an OPS of .718.
