A college baseball player at a private school in California was arrested for allegedly punching an elderly man in a bar, and a new update on the situation shows that the school he plays for has taken action.
21-year-old Owen Hayes is no longer enrolled at the Master's University and he is no longer affiliated with the baseball team. Hayes was involved in a confrontation with an 84-year-old man in a bar, and the altercation led to Hayes allegedly punching the man.
"When violations occur, we follow established procedures to ensure appropriate action is decisively taken. We are thankful that such behavior is exceedingly rare among our students, who come to TMU because they desire to honor the Lord," the Master's University said.
The university has removed the infielder's biography from the team website, suggesting that they're ready to cut ties with him entirely after this incient.r
The school is a private non-denominational Christian university, and they compete with other schools through the NAIA.
After turning himself in to the Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station, Hayes was charged with charged with felony assault likely to produce great bodily injury.
The incident allegedly occurred on February 27. According to TMZ Sports, a video shows a group of younger men surrounding the 84-year-old before one of them sucker punches him from behind.
The victim of the alleged attack suffered a skull fracture and brain bleeding, and they were knocked unconscious. Employees say he was a regular at the bar as well, making the situation even worse for members of the local community.
"The individual in question no longer attends The Master's University. The University takes all violations of its standards and biblical convictions seriously," the school sad in its statement.
The situation is similar to one that involved a college hockey player who pushed a woman's wheelchair down a flight of stairs at a bar. That player was removed from the team he played for, and the same has happened in this situation in California.
After suffering those serious injuries, hopefully the 84-year-old victim is able to fully recover and live a full quality of life after the vicious attack.
