The New England Patriots are set to play in London on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Patriots are no strangers to playing overseas in the regular season, but it will be the first professional trip abroad for rookie quarterback Drake Maye.

After losing his first career start against the Houston Texans last week, Maye is looking for his first career victory. He's also attempting to get fans in England to root for the Patriots, but his efforts may have been somewhat misguided.

When asked why fans from England should support the Patriots, Maye said "First off I think it comes with the name: New England."

The Patriots' name, logo and branding all call back to the Revolutionary War - a war America won for its independence against the British.

Fans on social media were quick to point out Maye's error.

"Not sure that's the angle you wanna take on that one," said NFL analyst Sam Monson.

"History class was during football practice," said one fan.

"Between openly calling Rodgers the Goat as the Patriots QB and now this I am beginning to think Drake Maye is not the smartest fella," another fan said.

"Ain't no way the red coats are rooting for a team named the Patriots," one fan said.

"Absolutely hate that he got drafted by the Pats because he seems like an unintentionally hilarious guy who I'd root for anywhere else," said another fan.

Maye probably won't win over any English fans with his answer to that question, but he can get them on his side with his play on the field. The No. 3 overall pick threw three touchdown passes in his first start against the Texans last week, giving the Patriots offense a much-needed boost.

Maye will attempt to lead the Patriots to their second win of the season on Sunday, as they'll take on the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars also played in London last week, losing to the Chicago Bears in Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

This week, the action moves to Wembley Stadium, and the game can be seen in the United States on the NFL Network at 9:30 AM ET.
