Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow recently purchased some sweet Christmas gifts for his offensive linemen.
Burrow revealed last week that he gifted his offensive linemen authentic Japanese katana swords from an armory in California, some of which dated back to the 1500s. The haul definitely cost Burrow several thousands of dollars, and his linemen made it clear they appreciated the gesture.
However, Burrow revealed, his trench protectors originally told him they wanted guns, which he balked at.
"Well, they wanted guns ... And I was like 'I don't know about guns, guys.'" Burrow said. "I was in the weapon mindset, and I was like, 'What's a cool weapon? Samurai swords, I think, are pretty dang cool.'"
Like any kinds of comments about guns in the United States, Burrow's quotes raised eyebrows and sparked debate on social media.
"Dude really wouldn't get them a badass ar Instead you get a sword you can hang on a mantle and never use. Woohoo," one person said.
"Says the dude who frost his tips and wears really weird clothing……" a second person added.
"lmfao look the replies to this tweet the US is so cooked man our obsession with guns is unhealthy," another person said.
"As a fellow samurai sword holder I applaud this move," a fourth person chimed in.
"joe burrow they could never make me hate you," a fifth person said.
If we're being honest, Burrow probably would have had to go through more hoops to secure guns for all of his linemen, so the swords were probably the smarter decision. He told reporters one of his employees, a woman named Nicole, was the in charge of finding the Japanese weaponry.
"So, she did a great job finding the best ones out there. So, I think guys were excited about it," Burrow said.
Burrow and the Bengals have a pivotal game this Sunday against the Denver Broncos as they try to keep their playoff hopes alive.
