The New York Jets are the only NFL team going through a complete reset this offseason, casting a wide net to find both a new head coach and a new general manager.

That net could be on the verge of landing them an Ohio State Buckeyes football legend. According to Anthony Rothman of 97.1 The Fan, Detroit Lions Special assistant to the owner and CEO Chris Spielman is set to interview for the Jets general manager job. The Jets fired general manager Joe Douglas during the season after six years in charge.

"Legendary Buckeye Chris Spielman will interview for the @nyjets GM job sources tell me. "Spiels" current exec asst to Detroit ownership has single handedly changed culture of the Lions by impacting the hiring of GM Brad Holmes & HC Dan Campbell," Rothman posted on X.

In the 1980s, Spielman was an All-American linebacker for the Buckeyes. In 1990s he was a dominant linebacker for the Detroit Lions and Buffalo Bills. And in the 2000s he tried his hand at coaching and broadcasting.

But Spielman really seemed to find his footing in an executive role. Since joining the Lions in 2020 he's been at the forefront of helping the Lions overcome their decades of futility and finally emerging as a major power in the NFL. He arrived in Detroit well-before both head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes, the men who have received the most credit for the team's rise to power.

If Spielman can bring that kind of culture-changing identity to the New York Jets, he could become one of the biggest power brokers in the history of the NFL.

But an interview is not a job offer and a job offer isn't a lock to be accepted.

The Jets have plenty of other candidates that they're looking at and maybe they'll wind up decided that they want someone who will be more agreeable with team owner Woody Johnson, or maybe has more years of experience in the front office.

There are plenty of great candidates to be an NFL GM out there, but the Jets may be hard-pressed to find someone who looks as good as Spielman does right now.
