The 16 Most Annoying Fan Bases In College Basketball (2:21)

The college basketball world got some shocking news on Thursday when Miami head coach Jim Larranaga stepped down.

It was super out of the blue since Larranga coached the team's first 12 games to start the 2024-25 season, compiling a 4-8 record. Bill Courtney will be the program's head coach for the rest of the season.

Larranaga held a press conference on Thursday to deliver the news to Miami fans and explain his decision to step away from coaching.

"It's really hard to put into words why I've decided to do this but it's because of my love of basketball," Larranaga said, (first transcribed by On3). "I love the game. I've loved coaching it. I love practice every day. I love working with the players. But because I love the game and I love the university that much, I felt like there's one thing you've got to constantly ask yourself. Are you going to give everything you have the commitment that it deserves?"

"Quite frankly, I've tried to do that throughout my life and throughout my time here, but I'm exhausted."

Larranaga finishes his Miami tenure with a 274-174 record, having led the program to a Final Four during the 2022-23 season and an Elite Eight during the 2021-22 season. He led the program to the NCAA Tournament six times in his 14 seasons at the helm.

Before he coached Miami, he coached George Mason for 14 seasons, leading the school to a Final Four berth in the 2005-06 season. He also led the school to the NCAa Tournament five times.

Larranaga coached at Bowling Green for 11 seasons before coaching George Mason. He finishes his coaching tenure with a 716-483 record, good for a .597 winning percentage.

Congrats to Larranaga on one heck of a coaching career.
