The 10 Craziest Things To Happen In Sports In 2024 (1:37)

The Dallas Cowboys began the season with head coach Mike McCarthy on the hot seat, and that fact hasn't changed as we approach the end of the year.

McCarthy is in the final year of his contract with Dallas, and the team has given no indication that it plans to bring him back for 2025. McCarthy and the Cowboys have had a difficult season, punctuated by the serious injury quarterback Dak Prescott suffered.

Monday's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals puts the Cowboys on the brink of elimination from playoff contention, but McCarthy has apparently done enough to earn a vote of confidence from some of his top players.

"In terms of coaching, man, Coach Mike, me and his relationship has always been really good. He always took real good care of me. I just don't know how the business side of it's going to go, you know?," said star pass rusher Micah Parsons on Monday.

In an interview with Yahoo Sports last week, Prescott said he "wholeheartedly" believed in McCarthy as head coach.

After Monday's loss - which moved Dallas to 5-8 - Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones addressed the support for McCarthy.

"Anytime you're looking at who's coaching the team in this day and time, if you got key players you look at the situation that gives them the best chance ... to be everything that they can be," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan Tuesday, according to ESPN's Todd Archer.

Jones appears to be open to the idea of bringing McCarthy back next season, and Parsons' endorsement is a difference from comments he made earlier this year.

The Cowboys appear to have the mindset that 2024 was a lost year, and that if they're able to bring everyone back, they'll take a look at what they can do with a healthy team in 2025.

Pro sports aren't always that simple, but there's certainly something to be said when it comes to continuity and chemistry that's built over time.

The Cowboys could hire a new coach next season, but Jones and the rest of the front office will need to determine if it's worth starting over instead of bringing back a trusted, known figure like McCarthy.
