Gleyber Torres Makes Telling Admission About Yankees After Leaving In Free Agency

Gleyber Torres doesn't sound too sad about leaving the New York Yankees this offseason.
Once the 2024 season came to an end, many people assumed Torres and the Yankees would go their separate ways. With that said, the All-Star second baseman signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Tigers on Friday. His contract with the Tigers is reportedly worth up to $15 million. In theory, he could rebuild his value before hitting free agency again at the age of 29.
On Saturday, the Tigers officially introduced Torres as the newest member of their team. He held a virtual press conference with reporters. He revealed that New York didn't extend an offer in free agency.
"After the World Series, I got a lot of phone calls from other teams and just focused to get an opportunity in another place," Torres told reporters. "I feel like I have to play where somebody wants to give the best for me, and I just want to be available to do the best for the team. I've got great friends there, great communication with the entire organization. I feel proud of myself for being with the Yankees for seven years, but now I'm with Detroit and just really happy they gave me the opportunity to play next year."
That seemed like a fine response from Torres, but he wasn't done. He then said he wasn't a "priority" for the Bronx Bombers.
"I think they have other priorities and I'm not on the list," Torres said. "I'm good."
To be fair, Torres didn't exactly receive a nice endorsement from Yankees general manager Brian Cashman earlier this offseason.
"I'm not gonna dissect what he's good at and not as good at," Cashman said. "Obviously he'll have a lot of conversations with a lot of teams that have a need in that area and that might include us, who knows. But appreciate his efforts while he was here."
Torres finished the 2024 season with a .257 batting average, 15 homers and 63 RBI. He'll try to prove the Yankees wrong next year in Detroit.
