A shark reportedly killed a tourist in a deep water attack on Sunday afternoon.

Egypt's Red Sea resort town of Marsa Alam had a tragedy on Sunday afternoon. Egypt's Ministry of Environment announced on Sunday that a foreign tourist had been killed in an attack.

The attack reportedly occurred outside of the designated swimming areas.

The attack occurred in deep waters, the ministry said, outside the designated swimming area of Marsa Alam.

The injured foreigner was taken Porto Ghalib hospital for treatment, the ministry statement said, adding that an emergency committee has been established to investigate the incident.

Their nationalities have not been disclosed.

There have been several similar incidents in recent years.

Reports have since revealed that tourist who died was 48 years old and from Rome.

While the ministry only said that the two victims were foreign, the AFP news agency reported they were Italian nationals, citing an unnamed source at the Italian foreign ministry.

The 48-year-old man who died was a resident of Rome, while the injured man was 69, according to AFP.Egyptian officials said the two tourists were transported to a hospital in Port Ghalib, around 30 miles north of Marsa Alam.
