A former NFL player who started a new career as a chef was shot on Tuesday evening during an attempted robbery.
Tobias Dorzon, a former running back, was shot along with a female acquaintance as they returned from dinner on Tuesday, according to local police.
Dorzon and his acquaintance were both taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and the police are investigating the incident.
"I am disheartened and saddened by the news that Prince George's County restaurant owner Tobias Dorzon was one of two people shot during an attempted robbery Tuesday night in my district," said county council member Wanika Fisher.
"Such a horrible act couldn't have happened to a better person. I am sending my deepest sympathies to him and the second victim, as well as their families and friends, and I wish them both a speedy recovery."
Fisher added that she would like to see those responsible "held accountable to the fullest extent of the law" and that she is looking forward to seeing Dorzon return to his restaurants soon.
"This is barbarous activity and conduct by violent criminals," said Hyattsville Police Chief Jarod J. Towers when describing the incident, noting that the shooting began before the suspects made demands to Dorzon and his acquaintance.
"This is not tolerated here in the city of Hyattsville. It's not tolerated anywhere in Prince George's County or the region. We will bring closure to this case. We will not stop until we seek justice in this case."
The 39-year-old Dorzon spent time with the Tennessee Titans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers during his NFL career, and he also played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.
Dorzon played his college ball at Tennessee State University, an HBCU currently coached by former Heisman trophy winner Eddie George.
Dorzon owns two restaurants in Maryland, and he was named Maryland's Chef of the Year last year by the state's restaurant association.
He's appeared on national television through the Food Network, and he hosts "Timeout with Tobias," a cooking show on ESPN+ and Hulu in which he cooks with other former and current athletes.
