Tragic Death of HS Football Player (0:51)

Back in 2022, three football players for the University of Virginia were killed in a campus shooting that shook up the country.

The person responsible for this senseless act of violence, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder on Wednesday. He was also hit with two counts of aggravated malicious wounding and five counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The authorities said Jones open fired on a charter bus he and other students were on. That shooting ultimately took the lives of Virginia football players Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D'Sean Perry. A fourth football player, Mike Hollins, was struck by the gunfire. A student named Marlee Morgan was also wounded.

Perry's family spoke to ESPN about Wednesday's development.

"Today, we sat eye to eye with the defendant as he plead guilty to ALL charges," the Perry family said. "It is now in God's hands. We ask the public to join us at the open sentencing hearing so that we can send the message to the defendant and the judge on the impact of the actions the defendant took on November 13, 2022 and what each life meant!!"

UVA president Jim Ryan also released a statement.

"Today's proceedings represent another step in a lengthy and painful journey for the families of the victims and for our community," Ryan said. "We continue to grieve the loss of three beloved members of our community and the injuries suffered by others on the bus."

Jones' hearing for his sentence will take place in February in Albemarle County Circuit Court. According to reports, he faces a maximum sentence of five life terms plus 23 years.
