Giants Sign Veteran Quarterback After Benching Daniel Jones

The days of Daniel Jones starting at quarterback for the New York Giants are long gone, make no mistake about it.
On Monday, the Giants announced that Tommy DeVito will start Week 12 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Veteran quarterback Drew Lock, who signed a one-year contract with the G-Men in the offseason, will be the primary backup. Jones was initially expected to be the third-string option, but that no longer appears to be the case.
Moments ago, the Giants signed veteran quarterback Tim Boyle to their practice squad. He played for the Miami Dolphins earlier this season, completing 57.7 percent of his pass attempts for 153 yards. In 2023, he had 360 passing yards, a touchdown and four interceptions for the New York Jets.
With Boyle on the practice squad, there's a good chance Jones will be inactive every game for the rest of the year.
The Giants can't really afford to make Jones their emergency quarterback because of his $23 million injury guarantee. If he can't pass a physical by March, his dead cap charge for 2025 would shoot up to $45 million.
While the changes to the depth chart seem like a business move, Giants head coach Brian Daboll claims it's anything but that.
"We're obviously not playing the way any of us want to play — and that's on all of us," Daboll told reporters. "But felt like this was a decision we needed to make here and try to spark things, change things up."
Last season, DeVito had 1,101 passing yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions for the Giants. The team went 3-3 with him as the starter.
Maybe, just maybe DeVito can help the Giants snap their losing streak. And if not, fans will start thinking about Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward wearing a Giants uniform.
