Former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys has called for the Football Association (FA) to part ways with Gareth Southgate, the current coach of the England national football team, before their round of 16 clash in Euro 2024, reported by GOAL. Keys believes that a change in leadership is necessary to improve England’s performance in the tournament.

England secured their place in the Euro 2024 round of 16 as group winners, despite lackluster performances in their group-stage matches. Their latest match against Slovenia ended in a goalless draw, raising concerns about the team’s form and readiness for the knockout stages.

Richard Keys suggested that the FA should consider sacking Gareth Southgate and appointing former Premier League manager Harry Redknapp on a short-term basis. Keys believes that Redknapp’s experience and expertise could provide a much-needed boost to the team’s performance in the upcoming knockout tie.

Speaking on beIN Sports, Keys said: “I'm so depressed, I thought that was so miserable once again tonight. I'm at a point where if I were able to make that decision, yes, I probably would because we are going nowhere double quick. We're here to win it, that, what I've seen tonight, that's not winning the next game, let alone the tournament. Harry Redknapp's sat in Dubai tonight, give him a call. [Jurgen] Klopp won't do it but Harry, you think he wouldn't be on a plane tomorrow morning?”

Southgate’s response to criticism

Gareth Southgate has acknowledged the criticism directed at him and the team. He stated that they have been “brutally honest” about their shortcomings and are focused on improving their performance. Southgate remains determined to lead the team to success in the tournament.

As group winners, England will face one of the third-placed teams from Group E in their round of 16 clash. The potential opponents include Romania, Belgium, Slovakia, or Ukraine. The match is scheduled to take place on Sunday in Gelsenkirchen.

While there have been calls for Southgate’s departure, the FA has not set specific targets for him to achieve in order to keep his job. However, there are reports that the FA is considering potential successors, with Pep Guardiola being mentioned as a dream appointment.

The performance of the England national football team in Euro 2024 has sparked criticism and calls for change. Richard Keys has urged the FA to replace Gareth Southgate with Harry Redknapp, while the FA is reportedly considering its options for the future. As England prepares for the round of 16, fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see if the team can rise to the occasion and deliver a stronger performance.
