On Friday night the Florida State football program fell to 1-6 with an historic loss to the Duke Blue Devils.

Duke defeated Florida State for the first time in program history this weekend with a 23-16 effort. Following the game, Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell was asked how they keep frustration from entering the building during a truly awful season.

"I can't allow these guys to get caught up in the record right now because right now the record is what it is. And, you know, but it's still about where we go and what we do with the opportunity that we have in front of us. And that is our focus," he said.

"And you know what? It was our focus last year when we won 13 games. It was the same thing. And, you know, because in reality, you know, if you allow yourself to get distracted by the circumstance, you miss out on the opportunity to go get better."

"And I do think there's been times that, you know, even a negative result, negative play, you know, we've allowed that to carry over at times. And, you know, you talk about trying too hard with all the want to. I mean, you've got to believe in those things."

While Norvell is preaching the right things, those on his coaching staff aren't exactly following along very well. During last night's game an assistant coach on the Seminoles sidelines took heat for flexing on a Duke player after they ran into each other on the sideline.

It's truly ridiculous behavior from whoever the Florida State assistant is on the sideline. Perhaps that's indicative of the team's season as a whole.

"What kind of coach runs his mouth like this to an opposing player? Why is he flexing after he got knocked down? FSU problems are way deeper than bad qb play," one person said about the coach.

Despite the brutal start to the season - just a year after finishing the ACC schedule undefeated - Norvell remains optimistic.

"You've got to believe in the work. And you've got to believe in that improvement and the ability to go that you can go make the play. You can, you know, execute in that moment," he said.

"And, you know, I'm an optimistic person because, you know, I'm around them every single day. And, you know, I believe in who they are. I believe in the character that they have," he added. "I believe in the toughness and the fight that they will show. And, you know, nobody wants to be where we are right now. But we are going to continue to fight, and we're going to get better."

Next up for Florida State is a battle against in-state rival Miami.
