Report: Veteran College Quarterback Benched Heading Into Week 8

Oklahoma State is reportedly making a change at quarterback.
The Cowboys opened the season 3-0 behind Alan Bowman, who amassed 396 passing yards and five touchdowns in a Week 3 blowout win over Tulsa. However, the seventh-year senior has since thrown two interceptions in each of Oklahoma State's three straight losses.
According to The O'Colly's Ashton Slaughter, OSU will likely get demoted this week. Garret Rangel is instead expected to start Friday night's game at BYU.
Furthermore, Bowman could slide to third on the depth chart behind redshirt freshman Zane Flores.
The well-traveled Bowman played three seasons at Texas Tech before spending two years on Michigan's bench. He then transferred to Oklahoma State, where he collected 3,460 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and 14 picks last season.
Bowman started the 2024 season strong in non-conference play, but he's competed just 52 of 102 passes for 686 yards in three Big 12 losses. Mike Gundy benched the 24-year-old for Rangel during last Saturday's 38-14 loss to West Virginia.
Rangel hasn't received much playing time since joining Oklahoma State as a three-star recruit in 2022. The redshirt sophomore has 1,076 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and six picks on 171 career attempts. He connected with De'Zhaun Stribling for a 43-yard touchdown during his Week 7 appearance.
"I feel like all the hard work and preparation we had just from my freshman year to last year to this year, it's finally paying off," Rangel told Slaughter. "And I'm excited to go out there and just let it all hang next week against BYU."
Rangel could make a significant statement by leading the Cowboys to an upset over the undefeated Cougars at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Friday's game starts at 10:15 p.m. ET.
