The upcoming presidential election - and the political climate as a whole - has increased tensions between Americans in recent months.

It's certainly been the case for Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre, who is now in the middle of a feud with a former ESPN anchor on social media.

Favre has been outspoken when it comes to his political beliefs, and has emphasized his endorsement for former president Donald Trump.

Favre posted a message about patriotism on social media Monday, saying "If you're born in the USA or an American citizen and you put other countries above us, then that's unpatriotic. That's it."

Former ESPN anchor and political commentator Keith Olbermann responded, taking a few shots at the former quarterback.

"Hey are your CTE checkups up to date? How'd your bank account audit?," Olbermann asked.

"I played football for a few years…I made a statement being pro-American… Didn't you cover football for a year or two?…What happened to that?," Favre snapped back.

Olbermann is likely best known for his time at ESPN, where he anchored "SportsCenter" during the mid-1990s. Following his time there and at FOX, he became a political commentator.

Olbermann hosted a nightly show on MSNBC, where he was often critical of conservative politicians and personalities. That show aired from 2003 through 2011, and he has since continued his political commentary with an independent podcast.

Favre has been embroiled in a scandal centered around welfare funds in the state of Mississippi, in which he allegedly accepted payments for public appearances he did not make.

The money was designated for  Mississippi's "Temporary Assistance for Needy Families" fund, and the state's Department of Human Services is seeking to have it repaid.

In total, the state DHS says that over $77 million was misspent, with millions going to both Favre and Southern Mississippi - his and his daughter's alma mater.

We'll see if Favre and Olbermann continue to take shots at one another on social media.
