Adam Schefter Has Telling Admission On Mike McCarthy, Cowboys Situation

It's hard to imagine the Mike McCarthy era extending past the 2024 season, but ESPN's Adam Schefter thinks "anything is possible."
The Cowboys are likely headed for just their second losing season since 2015 and things seem to be unraveling with each passing week. However, the NFL insider believes the coach's three consecutive 12-5 seasons coming into the year could buy him just enough goodwill to keep his job — as unlikely as that sounds.
"Anything's possible. They have to play well down the stretch," Schefter told Unsportsmanlike Radio. "I think Mike McCarthy is a good head coach. Even if Dallas didn't want to bring him back, I think he's worthy of getting other head coaching interviews. I don't know what's going to happen, but there aren't too many head coaches that won Super Bowls and have that on their resumes, that have an offensive background."
"To me, he certainly worthy of being kept in Dallas. Do I think it's going to happen? I don't think he'll be back in Dallas would be my guess today," he admitted. "But again, six-seven weeks to play out, they won on Sunday, all of a sudden we've got certain Cowboys fans dreaming of the fact they can make an unlikely push here and win some games and make the latter part of the season interesting."
"Again, do I think that will happen? No, but that's the great part about this," Schefter concluded. "Every year there's somebody that makes some unlikely run at this time of the year that we didn't expect. Every year at this time, there are coaches who coach themselves out of jobs, and there are coaches that coach themselves into jobs, and there are teams that cost their front office jobs, and there are teams that save front office jobs."
Dallas currently sits at 4-7 with some tough sledding down the stretch. At this point it seems more likely that the Cowboys get the No. 1 pick than make a run at the postseason. But crazier things have happened, right?
