Toronto Rock: 2024-2025 Season Preview
The Toronto Rock enter the 2024-2025 NLL season with redemption at the forefront of their minds after a strong 2023-2024 campaign that ended in playoff disappointment. Finishing atop the standings in the regular season with an impressive 15-3 record, the Toronto Rock proved why they are perennial contenders. That dominance was fueled by elite showings from Mark Matthews, who paced the team with 98 points, and Tom Schreiber, who contributed 76 points in a shortened 13-game season. The offense got plenty of support from the league’s top-rated defense, backstopped by Goaltender of the Year Nick Rose and his league-leading 9.18 goals-against average. A semifinal sweep at the hands of eventual champions, the Buffalo Bandits, though, left the Rock wanting more.
The Toronto offseason saw them go through some losses and gains. Some of the losses included Sheldon Burns and Brandon Slade, but probably more vital was the missing piece, an important component of the attack-Dan Lintner. Meanwhile, the Rock made key additions: Jake Darlison, Elijah Gash, and the return of Latrell Harris, who was out with injury. Head coach Matt Sawyer lauded Gash as a “physical specimen” who’s still yet to reach his full potential. These additions indicate a commitment from Toronto to solidifying its defense and cementing its status as one of the stingier teams to score on in the league.
The 2024-2025 schedule is replete with key matchups that will test Toronto early and often. The November 29th season opener against the newly relocated Ottawa Black Bears will set the stage for what promises to be a fiercely competitive campaign. The Toronto home opener on December 7th is a rematch of last season’s memorable battles against Albany. Fans will also mark February 14th on their calendar for a Valentine’s Day match-up with arch-nemesis Buffalo, a contest which will no doubt see the renewal of hostilities between the two juggernauts. And finally, an April 19th quarterfinal rematch with the Rochester Knighthawks could go a long way in determining what shape the playoff picture takes as the season winds down to its climax.
As the Toronto Rock opens the new season, they’ll be building on their strengths and working out the lingering kinks. None better than the core of Mitch de Snoo and Brad Kri, arguably among the league’s best-forming a very important piece of the team’s defense. Consistency from Nick Rose in net again will be a strong determining factor in how far the Rock go. Mark Matthews and Tom Schreiber will continue to dominate in the scoring department, while Corey Small and Dan Craig add more gunfire. The team is dependent on a number of such players, and this can test deepness, especially if injury issues abound. The need for balance in the roster is going to be key, with the integration of new additions in players such as Elijah Gash and Jake Darlison.
The Toronto Rock enter this season of high expectations, 2024-2025, looking to regain the top spot in the NLL and avenge last year’s heartbreak. With veteran leadership, strong points on defense, and new talent, the Rock have all the tools needed to make another push for the championship.
