Les pénalités coûtent cher au Rouge et noir dans leur effort de remontée

The Ottawa REDBLACKS suffered a frustrating loss on Monday afternoon, falling 19-12 to the Montreal Alouettes.

The game was always within reach, but seemingly every time something positive happened for the visitors, a blow knocked them off the rails, whether it was a sack, turnover, or big penalty.

After both teams traded short drives, the Alouettes got on the board first, with Jose Maltos kicking a 32-yard field goal. Not long after, the REDBLACKS thought they had gotten off the field after a punt, but it was the beginning of their penalty troubles instead, as they were flagged for running into the kicker.

The Birds capitalized on their extra life, marching down the field and scoring a touchdown on a Davis Alexander run.

Later in the second quarter, Montreal chipped in two more field goals, backing Ottawa into a 13-0 deficit. With time winding down in the half, Damon Webb picked off Alexander, and set up a Lewis Ward field goal with zero on the clock, giving the REDBLACKS life as they headed to the locker room.

In the third, the REDBLACKS' offence came to life, but were forced to settle for field goals twice, cutting the Montreal lead down to just four points.

Unfortunately, that was as close as they would get, as Maltos reestablished the Alouttes' 10-point lead with a couple of field goals of his own. Ward did bring Ottawa back within a score late in the game, setting a new personal single-season record for made kicks with 52.

Their chance to draw even on their final drive resulted in only a couple of yards, as the REDBLACKS dropped their fourth-consecutive game.

Ottawa will look to keep their chances of hosting the East Semi-Final alive next weekend, when they head to BMO Field to play the Toronto Argonauts.
