Reason Why WWE Changed Tamyra Mensah-Stock's Ring Name

Tamyra Mensah-Stock, the 2020 Summer Olympics gold medalist, made her WWE debut earlier this week.

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, Tamyra claimed her victory in the 68-kilogram weight class, becoming the first black woman to achieve gold in freestyle wrestling. Subsequently, she secured her second world title at the 2022 World Athletics Indoor Championships.

In March of this year, Tamyra triumphed in her debut match at an NXT house show in Melbourne, Florida, defeating Breanna Covington. During the NXT Level Up tapings this past Tuesday, she made her first in-ring TV appearance by participating in a singles match.

The Olympic champion faced Wren Sinclair in her television debut using the ring name Tyra Mae Steele. There have been questions regarding using a ring name instead of her real name.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that the same question has been raised within WWE. The rationale is that the average WWE fan may need to be more familiar with Tyra’s real name, so a more recognizable alias may be more effective.

This stands in contrast to the approach with Jade Cargill, where the assumption was that the average WWE fan was already familiar with her name due to her AEW tenure.

Additionally, while WWE had not previously expressed interest, the decision to sign Tamyra was driven by her Olympic gold medal.
