Reason Why Jon Moxley Was Crowned The IWGP World Champion

Jon Moxley has a long-standing association with New Japan Pro-Wrestling and has been notably featured in the promotion over the years.

Moxley won the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship by defeating Tetsuya Naito at NJPW Windy City Riot earlier this year. Subsequently, Moxley successfully defended the IWGP World Heavyweight Title several times, culminating in a rematch with Tetsuya Naito at AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door 2024, where he dropped the title to the Japanese star.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that Moxley was crowned the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion after a collaborative decision between AEW President Tony Khan and NJPW, allowing for two title changes to occur in the United States.

This collaboration facilitated Moxley’s historic achievement of being the first person to concurrently hold the AEW, IWGP, and WWE World Championships.
