Oba Femi: Nick Saban Had His Eye On Me When I Was At Alabama

Oba Femi reveals that Nick Saban had his eye on him when he was at the University of Alabama.
The NXT Champion studied at the University of Alabama as a student. During his time there, he won the shot put title at the SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships in 2021 and 2022, among other medals.
For a man of his size and stature, American football seemed the obvious choice. However, Oba Femi has never played the game, although Alabama head coach Nick Saban certainly had his eye on the powerhouse.
Oba Femi recently appeared on the No-Contest Wrestling Podcast. In one highlight, he was asked if Nick Saban, who was Alabama’s head coach at the time, approached him about joining the football team.
“Not personally, but he definitely had his eye on me, for sure—him and all the strength coaches, especially toward the end of the year when we started doing tests to find our maxes,” Femi said. “I'm throwing 700 on the squat and things like that, and word gets around—like, we've got this freaking animal here.”
“But the issue came down to the fact that I hadn't played football before. I'm from Nigeria, and we don't play football there. You can't give a full-ride scholarship to someone who's never played the sport, especially at a top-tier school like Alabama. Let's just put it that way.”
