Cain Velasquez has been sentenced for his involvement in a 2022 shooting.
Velasquez, a former UFC Heavyweight Champion who had a brief WWE run, was allegedly involved in a shooting in February 2022. He allegedly shot at a vehicle containing Harry Goularte, who had been accused of molesting one of his relatives. Paul Bender, Goularte’s stepfather, was said to be injured in the shooting. Velasquez was charged with attempted murder. He pleaded not guilty in August 2022, and he was later granted bail.
On March 24th, Cain Velasquez was sentenced to five years for attempted murder and other charges at a hearing at the Santa Clara County Hall of Justice in San Jose, California, per NBC Bay Area.
It was noted that Renee Hessling, Velasquez’s lawyer, asked the judge to release him on probation. However, Velasquez is expected to serve a year in prison, as he received credit for time served in jail and in-home confinement. Specifically, he was given 1,283 days credit for time served.
“I believe that, in some ways, justice was served today despite feeling disappointed that he is back in custody,” Hessling said.
Furthermore, the Santa Clara County district attorney recommended that Velasquez should be sentenced to 30 years to life, as they argued that he tried to kill all three people in the other vehicle.
Meanwhile, the defense noted that Cain Velasquez noted that what he did was wrong, but he argued that his family was “destroyed” by the alleged molester, and he worried about the possibility that the man would return to the scene of the alleged assault.
Velasquez had faced 10 charges from the incident in question, including assault with a deadly weapon (multiple accounts) and shooting an occupied motor vehicle.
