Anthony Mackie was very impressed by Samoa Joe’s performance opposite him in Twisted Metal.

The AEW star recently took a leave of absence from AEW to film the second season of the show. He starred as Sweet Tooth in the program, although Will Arnett provided the voiceover for the character.

Anthony Mackie and Tyler James Williams spoke with each other for Variety, where Mackie mentioned working with Samoa Joe on Twisted Metal. Mackie explained how he was blown away by the former AEW Champion’s performance. He noted that Samoa Joe was “acting his ass off” in their scenes together.

Additionally, Mackie claimed he was putting on a performance that a veteran actor would struggle with. He said that the performance was incredible because he never expected that level of acting from Samoa Joe.

“He's not, he's not. And that's a testament to Samoa Joe. I was blown away by this dude from the very first moment he stepped on set. He was doing everything with that mask on—acting his ass off.” Anthony Mackie said about Samoa Joe.

“It was amazing because he and Will had worked out this idea of what the character was going to be, and Joe was doing some incredible, almost circus-level performing. For him, it was all about the body work. It was like he was doing vaudeville-type stuff, knowing he'd be voiced over, but he knew all the lines, hit all the jokes, nailed everything.”

“And honestly, for his first time acting, I don't think even a veteran actor could've done what he did. When we first talked about it, we thought he'd just come in, Will would record the lines, and Joe would do the movements, and I'd react to that.”

“But then it evolved. Joe was like, 'Yeah, I can do it.' And on that very first day he stepped on set, I was like, 'That's Sweet Tooth.' He owned it. Dude, he really, really owned it. It was incredible because it was so surprising—I didn't expect that from him.”
