Noah Millard Breaks Nine-Year-Old Ivy League Record in The Mile, #24 All-Time

Kicking off the finals session on Day 4, Noah Millard broke his second Ivy League record of the season with a 14:28.43 in the 1650 freestyle. That was more than three seconds faster than the previous record set by Penn’s Chris Swanson when winning NCAAs in 2016.

He was quicker throughout almost the entire race than his previous PB from November, but compared to Swanson’s record he actually took the time off in the first and third 500’s, and gave a little back in both the middle 500 and final dash. The drop from his second 500 to third 500 here looks to have been part of some tactical racing within the field, as Owen Lloyd, Rex Maurer and Lucas Henveaux all did the same.
This was Millard’s second scoring swim of the championship, giving him 24 points individually and all but assuring Yale’s place in the top 25. This was Yale’s first top-eight swim at NCAAs since Alex Righi finished fifth in the 50 free back in 2009.
Millard broke his first Ivy League record this season at the Ivy League Championships, going 4:07.68 in the 500 free to break the 4:10 barrier for the first time. He was slightly off that time on Day 2, winning the ‘B’ final in 4:08.69. Only a junior, he leads a trifecta of Ivy ‘A’ finalists at NCAAs this year including Matt Fallon and Jack Kelly.
