Virginia junior Aimee Canny got in on the record-breaking action during the Cavaliers’ SCM dual meet against Florida on Friday, registering a new African Record in the women’s 200 freestyle.

Canny, a South African native, won the event in a time of 1:54.13, lowering the African and South African Record of 1:54.48 she set at the 2021 Swim England National Winter Championships.

Relative to her swim from three years ago, Canny was more conservative early but closed a bit quicker, doing most of her damage on the last 50 with a quick closing split of 28.66.

The 20-year-old, who will turn 21 next month, is also the African Record holder in the long course 200 free, having set a time of 1:56.80 this past April at the South African Championships.

That performance qualified her for the Olympics in Paris, her second appearance at the Games after debuting in Tokyo as a relay-only swimmer.

In Paris, Canny qualified for the semi-finals of the women’s 200 free, finishing 12th overall in 1:57.34.

In collegiate competition, Canny has had a successful first two seasons in Charlottesville, placing 3rd in the 200 free and swimming on a pair of national title-winning relays as a freshman in 2023.

Last season as a sophomore, she won the ACC title in the 200 free and followed up by placing 4th in the 200 free and 10th in the 200 breast at NCAAs.

In the dual against Florida on Friday, she also won the 200 breast (2:22.38) and split 53.54 on the UVA 400 free relay. Canny was also on Virginia’s ‘B’ 200 medley relay that placed 3rd, though results don’t have splits for that event.
