Not long after Professional Fighters League (PFL) announced that Bellator MMA would be closing down shop for good, Patricio Pitbull was granted his release from his contractual obligations with the promotion. Shortly after that, the featherweight champion set his sights on a top Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) contender.

Indeed, Pitbull posted a simple message of "Hi" on social media while tagging former UFC 145-pound champion, Alexander Volkanovski, which many obviously took as a subtle challenge for a future showdown. Pitbull has called for this fight before, and now that he is a free agent a bout between the two powerhouses may be inevitable if Dana White and Co. sign the man many considered to be the face of Bellator.

Pitbull has gone on record that he would love nothing more than to compete inside the world-famous Octagon before his career comes to an end, and that option is closer than ever before.

At 37 years of age, Pitbull has shown that he still has plenty left in the tank, going 4-2 in his last six fights, which includes getting revenge on A.J. McKee at Bellator 277 to recapture the 145-pound strap. The Brazilian bomber spent the last 14 years fighting under the Bellator banner, amassing a 24-7 record in that span. A bout against Volkanovski — who is jut 1-3 in his last four title fights — would be a sight to witness for fight fans who have longed to see him face off against the best UFC has to offer.

As for the future of the rest of the Bellator fighters, that will likely be clearer in the days and weeks to come since PFL intends to retain some of its top talent, which means more cuts could be coming down the pipe.
