Probably because two members of the jury let out an audible gasp when confronted with evidence from the plaintiff's attorneys.
The jury in Conor McGregor's civil trial is comprised of four men and eight women, with two of the "lovely ladies" (as described by the defense) letting out audible gasps when confronted by unsettling evidence from the plaintiff's attorneys.
"We have ears," McGregor's lead attorney, Remy Farrell, remarked.
McGregor is on trial for alleged sexual assault, stemming from an incident inside a Dublin hotel back 2018. After law enforcement failed to press charges, the victim slapped "Notorious" with a civil suit that could result in substantial monetary damages.
Depending on how the jury votes.
"It may be the case some, a lot, most of you, have negative views about Mr McGregor, some of you may even loathe him, there's no point pretending it may be otherwise. It's important I address that," Farrell told the jury in his closing statement. "You may also be unimpressed with a man who leaves family home on Saturday, goes drinking with women in hotel penthouses … they're all unlikely to endear him to you. I'm not asking you to like him; I'm asking you to look at the evidence. I'm not asking you to invite him to Sunday lunch, but to interrogate your own views."
McGregor has four children with fiancée Dee Devlin.
"This case is not about some kind of 'hot take' or not about your gut or what some color writer in a newspaper says it's about," Farrell continued. "This case is about the evidence and nothing but the evidence. It's not about vindication. It's about those questions on the issue paper. That and nothing else. You do not give a verdict in accordance with your gut reaction, with feelings, or that you might not like Mr McGregor. All that matters is what you think. That's all that matters in this case. I'm inviting you to deal with this in a methodical and systematic way."
The jury could reach a verdict by the end of the week.
