Jon Jones has been hit with a medical suspension by the New York State Athletic Commission.

The UFC heavyweight champion barely took a punch as he scored a third-round knockout win over Stipe Miocic at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night.

Still, he has been ordered to rest for a brief period of time, while his opponent and a few other UFC 309 athletes are set to be sidelined for much longer.

The longest suspensions handed down were for 90 days. The New York State Athletic Commission confirmed the full list of suspensions to MMA Fighting on Wednesday.

Jon Jones hit with 'mandatory rest' period after UFC 309

Jon Jones was one of eight UFC 309 fighters given a 'mandatory rest' period of seven days after they emerged from their respective fights relatively unscathed.

Bo Nickal, Jim Miller, Jonathan Martinez, Marcin Tybura, Ramiz Brahimaj Eduardo Moura and Veronica Hardy have also been ordered to sit out for a week.

Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler have been suspended from the sport for 30 days following their wild five-round co-main event.

Viviane Araujo, Paul Craig, Karine Silva, Mauricio Ruffy, Marcu McGhee, Damon Jackson, David Onama, Roberto Romero, and Oban Elliott are also barred from MMA for the next month.

Stipe Miocic was the only UFC 309 fighter hit with a 60-day ban after suffering a body shot knockout in the main event.

Bassil Hafez, James Llontop, and Mickey Gall were all suspended for 90 days – they will need neurology clearance.

Heavyweight prospect Jhonata Diniz is also barred from MMA for 90, but he needs primary care physician clearance after getting cut badly in his first career loss.

What's next for Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic?

Jon Jones shut down retirement rumors immediately after beating Stipe Miocic, but he continues to insist his preference is to fight Alex Pereira instead of Tom Aspinall.

It appears that the 37-year-old will be heading into negotiations with UFC boss Dana White, who wants to make Jones vs Aspinall, in the very near future.

As for Miocic, his legendary run in MMA has come to an end. The 42-year-old confirmed his retirement in the Octagon moments after his loss was confirmed, and he's since doubled down on his stance in a social media statement.

Miocic will go back to his firefighter day job, while MMA fans continue to debate his place among the very best heavyweights the sport has ever seen.
