This past Saturday at UFC Macau, Ming Shi became the Road to the UFC champion after scoring a viral KO over Xiaocan Feng in the third round of their tournament final.
The promotion landed in Macau, China, for the first time in 10 years this past Saturday with a big bantamweight main event between Petr Yan and Deiveson Figueiredo.
Despite the blockbuster 135lb main event, the biggest star to emerge from the event was Ming Shi, the strawweight Road to the UFC tournament winner.
Ming Shi scores a Knockout of the Year contender at UFC Macau
The 30-year-old scored one of the best KOs of the year, head-kicking Xiaocan Feng unconscious in the third round of their final.
Terrifyingly, Feng didn’t return to her feet as doctors rallied around her to try and wake her from unconsciousness. Unfortunately, a stretcher was brought into the Octagon and she was taken out with a brace around her neck.
Ming was down two rounds on two of the judges’ scorecards heading into the final round, with her incredible head kick being compared to a ‘Rocky’ story.
“I feel really happy – but I actually worry about my opponent. I really hope she is okay, she’s young and – sorry… That’s what happened in the semi-finals, I had a lot of opportunities to knock out my opponent, but I think I have too much mercy,” she told Michael Bisping in her Octagon interview.
The UFC went on to award Ming Shi with a Performance of the Night bonus, meaning she earned an additional $50,000 for her incredible come-from-behind KO win.
Ming Shi reveals she is a full-time doctor and keeps her MMA career secret
Following the viral KO, Ming Shi revealed that she has another career outside of fighting, and her parents don’t actually know about the fact she is a fighter, now fighting in the sports premier promotion.
‘The Doctor’ is an extremely fitting fight nickname for Shi who serves as a full-time doctor outside of her fight career.
Shi admitted in an interview with UFC News following her fight, that her fans worry about her because of her only being 5’2 and her other ‘deficiencies’.
“In the Octagon, a lot of fans worry about me because I’m small in the division. I have bad eyes and don’t have enough testosterone, but in this Octagon, I’m the boss, and I will decide how the match will go and how the fight will be,” Shi said.
Fortunately for the 30-year-old, UFC CEO Dana White has recently teased that he may open up an atomweight female division which would suit Ming, who has fought at 105lbs previously.
