A rare miscue by legendary UFC Octagon announcer Bruce Buffer at UFC Mexico City.

Bruce Buffer is undoubtedly one of the greatest broadcasters in combat sports history and has held the prestigious title of ‘UFC Octagon announcer” since 1996. But even the best in their respective disiplines screw up every once in a while.

Buffer, 67, has seen the UFC grow from a heavily-mocked platform in its infancy to a global phenomenon during his time with the promotion. He’s stood in the center of the cage to introduce some of the biggest fights in UFC history, featuring top names like Jon Jones, Conor McGregor, and Amanda Nunes.

While Buffer’s activity level isn’t what it once was, he still announces many marquee events, including high-profile UFC Fight Nights. On Saturday at UFC Mexico City, Buffer made a rare mistake in the Octagon after one of the card’s wildest finishes.

Bruce Buffer botches Jamall Emmers’s name after wild knockout at UFC Mexico City

Featherweights Jamall Emmers and Gabriel Miranda helped warm up the action during the UFC Mexico City prelims. Emmers and Miranda, two of the division’s best finishers, didn’t waste any time getting after it in the Octagon.

Emmers quickly wore down Miranda with his boxing, finding a home with his right uppercut and punches off of feints. With just under a minute remaining in Round 1, Emmers landed a straight right that collapsed Miranda, before sealing the TKO win with ground-and-pound.

It was a massive win for Emmers after trading wins and losses in recent years. It was his second first-round knockout over his last three fights, after finishing Dennis Buzukja at UFC 295.

As Emmers and Miranda stood with referee Fernando Salas to make the knockout official, Buffer made a rare mistake, announcing Miranda as the winner as the UFC Mexico City fans in attendance applauded Emmers. To Buffer’s credit, he quickly attempted to fix the mistake, but his microphone was cut off as Daniel Cormier went to interview Emmers.

You can watch the entire scene in the clip below.

Fight fans had a field day on social media after Buffer’s blunder.

“Still in the background with the mic cut out [DEAD],” one fan wrote on X.

“Bro I was so sad, why couldn’t they let my dude Bruce correct himself?” another said.

“Bruce blooper!”

“Naw them cutting his mic made it 10x worse [LAUGHS] and funny.”

“You let us down Buff…”

“Buff needs to retire.”

“Rare Bruce L.”

“Bro him just casually standing there and announcing Jamall Emmers as the real winner in d— near silence is f—— hilarious.”

This wasn’t the first time Buffer has mistakenly announced the wrong winner inside the Octagon. After Anthony Smith submitted Vitor Petrino at UFC 301 last year, Buffer began to announce Petrino as the winner before reversing course and making the correct call.

Luckily, Emmers didn’t seem to mind Buffer’s blunder as the card moved forward.

Bruce Buffer moved a fighter to tears during cage intro at UFC Seattle

Buffer’s mistake comes just weeks after UFC featherweight Jean Silva was moved to tears during his introduction at UFC Seattle. The moment went viral on social media, especially after Silva earned a brutal knockout to secure his upcoming showdown with Bryce Mitchell.

Buffer’s mistake wasn’t the only bizarre angle of the UFC Mexico City prelims. Another judging controversy ensued as MarQuel Mederos kicked off the card with a controversial win over Austin Hubbard.

Joe Pyfer withdrew from his UFC Mexico City bout just hours before the event due to an illness. Kelvin Gastelum was removed from the card as the promotion wasn’t able to find a short-notice replacement.
