'Bronze Bomber' Returns To Action On June 27

Former WBC Heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder is set to make his return to the boxing ring on June 27, 2025 as he has been booked to trade leather against Tyrrell Herndon in Wichita, Kansas, per a report from ESPN.
Once known as one of the best and fearsome fighters in all of boxing, Wilder has looked like a shell of his former self over the past few years, going just 1-4 in his last five fights since 2020, losing three of those bouts via KO/TKO. "The Bronze Bomber" was last seen getting brutally finished by Zhilei Zhang in June of 2024 via devastating knockout (see it again here).
Prior to his slump, Wilder was 42-0-1, which included 10 consecutive title defenses before losing the WBC and The Ring belts to Tyson Fury in Feb. 2020, the first of two straight defeats to "Gypsy King," which was the onset of his downward spiral. Now, Wilder will attempt to get back to his winning ways as he searches for his first win in three years.
Herndon isn't exactly a household name, though he is currently on a three-fight win streak and boasts a professional record of 24-5 with 15 knockouts. The San Antonio, Texas native, however, has been knocked out four times in his career and his chin will be tested against Wilder, who has secured several memorable finishes in his career.
That said, many have wondered if Wilder's best days are long behind him. A loss against a journeyman like Herndon will certainly only add further fuel to that fire, and perhaps signal the end for big-money matchups for a man who was once sitting at the top of the boxing world in the Heavyweight division.
While many were hoping "The Bronze Bomber" would be matched up with former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 265-pound champion, Francis Ngannou — who has lost both of his professional bouts — a win here could help pave the way for that juicy matchup next.
