Day one of Newmarket's Guineas meeting returns this Friday afternoon with a six-race card.

While the field sizes are relatively small, the quality is high, with a Group 2 contest complimented by a couple of Listed races.

The races don't lack competitiveness though and our expert, Colm Doyle, has come up with his three best bets on the card for Friday afternoon.

3.35 Newmarket – Alaskan Gold

The King Charles II Stakes usually features a small field and this year's renewal is no different with just six runners at the declaration stage.

There's not much to separate most of them on ratings, but Alaskan Gold could be the one to side with at reasonable odds with a recent run under his belt.

He was highly progressive last season, finishing up with a narrow defeat in Listed company on heavy ground at Doncaster, shaping like a step up in trip could be the way forward in his three-year-old campaign.

Karl Burke's charge proved as much when a close up fifth in the Group 3 Greenham Stakes on his return.

He should relish the drop in class to Listed level here and Burke's horses have generally been coming on plenty for their reappearance outings this campaign.

The effort at Newbury is worth marking up given that he lost a shoe in-running and this colt is proven with some cut in the ground, unlike some of his rivals.

The son of Kodiac is going to need to step up again to win this, but that's entirely feasible and his low draw shouldn't be an inconvenience, with four of the last five winners coming from stalls one or two.

4.10 Newmarket – Castle Way

The feature race on Friday's card is the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes and it's a slight surprise to see that Castle Way doesn't head the market at the time of writing.

The Almanzor gelding won at Pattern level on both the July course and the Rowley course here last year and, while he was a beaten favourite in a Group 2 at Meydan on his return, he had an excuse that day; this is an easier test.

Charlie Appleby's runners have been coming on a bundle for their first runs of the campaign and this gelding can get back on track in a below-par race for the grade.

4.45 Newmarket – Silent Age

Another Appleby runner looks interesting in the finale on the card.

Silent Age looks like a nice prospect to go to war with this season, winning his first two starts and he can be forgiven a below-par effort at Newcastle when last seen, having missed the break badly after playing up in the stalls previously.

Expect him to get back on track rather swiftly for a yard who have really started to hit form in recent weeks (six winners since April 18th) and a mark of 89 could be generous on handicap debut.
