Neither an awkward draw nor lengthy layoff was any sort of problem for Clark Brewster and Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt's COGBURN (h, 5, Not This Time–In a Jif, by Saintly Look), who proved a pace-pressing winner of the GII TwinSpires Turf Sprint, his fourth victory from time starts on the grass. Racing for the first time since finishing fifth in a blanket finish in the GII Turf Sprint at Kentucky Downs last September, the $150,000 OBS April breezer flashed good early speed from the 13 hole and sat right up on an opening quarter-mile split of :22.61 while three deep on the course. Tugging his way to the front on the turn, Cogburn responded when asked, opened up into the final eighth of a mile and ran out a comfortable winner. Filo Di Arianna (Brz) (Drosselmeyer) closed off well at the inside for second ahead of favored Mischief Magic (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), who made belated outside progress to be third. Grade III placed on the dirt, Cogburn switched to the turf around this time last year, winning a pair of five-furlong stakes at Lone Star Park before causing a 15-2 upset in the GIII Troy S. at Saratoga, defeating future GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint hero Nobals (Noble Mission {GB}). Sales history: $52,000 Wlg '19 KEENOV; $310,000 Ylg '20 FTKSEP; $150,000 2yo '21 OBSAPR. Lifetime Record: 13-7-2-0. O-Clark Brewster & Bill & Corinne Heiligbrodt; B-Ballary Bloodstock (KY); T-Steve Asmussen.
