Due to the threat of a nearby wildfire, the horses stabled at the San Luis Rey training center are currently being evacuated and sent to Del Mar racetrack.

According to Santa Anita general manager, Nate Newby, the training center is in an “Evacuation Warning Level 2- Set” area.

“With medium/high winds in the forecast today we started evacuating early this morning,” wrote in a text Tuesday morning.

According to Cal Fire, the nearby Lilac Fire has burned through 80 acres and is 10% contained.

“Fire is now at 10% containment so they are making progress, but we aren't taking any chances,” Newby wrote.

He added that he believes the fire is currently roughly three to four miles away from the training center, which is owned by The Stronach Group.

According to Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) CEO and president Bill Nader, 40 of the roughly 275 horses stabled at San Luis Rey have already arrived at Del Mar. Two different van companies are currently evacuating the horses.
