There is little doubt that a golf ball’s condition and specification significantly impacts performance.

Crafted to maximise flight, distance and speed, the importance of a high-quality ball is greater than ever.

Players are constantly trying new equipment and techniques to make marginal gains over the rest of the field, and in-depth data is being used more and more to gain a competitive edge.

However, the value of data insights and science has a huge impact on the game of one player in particular: two-time Major winner Bryson DeChambeau.

Known for his willingness to push the boundaries and use science to gain an advantage over the field, the American has one unusual trick up his sleeve.

Wait for it… the two-time US Open champion salts his golf balls.

That’s right. The American soaks his golf balls in an epsom salt solution before using them on the course and claims the benefits make an impact on their performance.

DeChambeau believes placing the balls in the solution helps ensure they are not out of balance.

The process is used to eliminate balls that are off-centre or with uneven dimples that might have adverse on the flight of his monstrous tee shots.

Though potentially appearing unnecessary, the soaking of the golf balls highlights his constant desire for precision, trying to gain an inch here or there over his competitors.

DeChambeau, who is ever-growing in popularity due to his fun social media output, will be affected more than anyone by imperfections in his golf balls.

His incredible swing speeds make the ball’s flight path susceptible to straying in one direction if its balance is a hair off.

DeChambeau uses the Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash golf ball at Majors and on the LIV Golf tour, a ball with lower full swing spin allowing for extra carry from his driver.

DeChambeau admits that it’s his manager who carries out the tedious task of salting balls but it’s one that he believes is hugely worthwhile.

When describing his attention to detail at the US Open, he explained: “Golf is a sport where the margins are so small and even minor inconsistencies matter.”
