Charley Hull has been on our radar since she was a teenager and remains a Major winner waiting to happen. She’s sparky, funny and prodigiously talented and here we look at her unique path to the upper echelons of the game.
Born?
Hull was born in Kettering on 20/3/96. She first hit a ball when she was just two years old and, by the time she was 10, she had already won a competition at Turnberry and played with Morgan Pressel in the Women's British Open pro-am. She left school at 13 to be home schooled and presumably play a lot of golf.
Turn pro?
She left the amateur ranks on New Year's Day in 2013. Incredibly her first five starts all resulted in runners-up places and she finished the year as the LET Rookie of the Year. Later in the year she made her Solheim Cup debut as Europe won on American soil for the first time with Hull thrashing Paula Creamer in the singles.
First pro win?
The following year triumphed in Morocco after closing with a brilliant nine-under 62. That put her in a play-off with Gwladys Nocera and Hull added another birdie at the first extra hole to pick up €67,500. She finished the 2014 season on top of the Order of Merit.
Married?
Hull was married to a mixed martial arts fighter but they divorced in 2021.
Car?
Hull only passed her test at the age of 27 and she immediately splashed out on a new car.
"I passed my test in four weeks so I was pretty happy with that,” she said. “I only had three minors out of 15. You could get 15 wrong, but I only got three wrong, and that was right toward the end because I didn’t put my indicator on. I wanted a Defender, the new Land Rover Defender but I can’t get insured in it because it’s too much of a fast car. So I got a Range Rover instead, a small one, Evoque."
She now drives a BMW X5.
Lives?
The 29-year-old now resides in Sunningdale which is close to her boyfriend. She is often seen playing and practising at Woburn where she has played for years and she spends a lot of time in Florida.
Favourite sporting teams?
She is a big fan of Liverpool FC, much like Dame Laura Davies.
Earnings?
Her official career earnings are now over $11.5m. She has played predominantly on the LPGA Tour since 2015 where she has enjoyed a successful career but has only won twice. In recent years Hull has had three top-3 finishes in the Majors and she nearly captured the US Women's Open at Pebble Beach when she came out with the now famous 'Shy kids don't get sweets comment' when playing the 72nd hole.
Equipment?
Hull signed with TaylorMade in 2019 and extended her contract in 2022. She uses a full bag of TaylorMade clubs, going for the Qi10 low spin driver and the P7MB (muscleback) irons. Putter wise she now has the TP Soto Hydro Blast, a blade putter, in the bag. The oldest club in her bag is a SIM Max hybrid.
In 2024 she partnered with the clothing brand, Malbon, an American lifestyle brand which continues to push the boundaries in golfing fashion.
Biggest achievement?
In 2016 Hull won the season-ending Tour Championship, beating a host of the world's best players. You would strongly fancy that Hull's best work is still to come, with a Major just around the corner.
In 2022, as well as the runner-up finish at Pebble Beach, Hull was also second to Lilia Vu at Walton Heath.
Another notable achievement is playing on the past seven Solheim Cup teams where she has contributed 16.5 points.
