For a long time, the ICC Champions Trophy was a staple of the cricketing calendar, but the 2025 iteration of the event will be the first time that it's been played since 2017 – when Pakistan won it by beating India at the Oval in London.

As the tournament returns, let’s take a moment to look at the five highest run-scorers in the history of the event.

It’s no real surprise who occupies first position.

5. Sourav Ganguly (India)

With 13 matches and 11 innings, Ganguly’s average was helped by a couple of outstanding undefeated centuries. Opening the batting for India his highest score in the tournament was an undefeated 141 against South Africa in Nairobi. But he also made an undefeated 117 against England in Colombo.

With a total of 665 runs at an average of 73.88, Sourav Ganguly is the fifth highest run scorer of all time in the ICC Champions Trophy.

4. Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka)

The legendary Sri Lanka wicketkeeper batsman played a significantly higher number of games than Ganguly as he amassed a total of 683 runs in the tournament.

From 21 innings he averaged 37.94 per knock with a highest score of 134 not out against England at the Oval in a game that saw Sri Lanka win by seven wickets.

3. Shikhar Dhawan (India)

Dhawan only played at two Champions Trophies, but he was prolific in both. In short, he never failed to get started, with his lowest score, a knock of 21, made in the 2017 final against Pakistan.

In 10 innings he scored three centuries (one undefeated), three half centuries and twice he was out in the forties. With a total of 701 runs at an average of 77.88 Shikhar Dhawan is a Champions Trophy legend.

2. Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka)

Enduring, reliable, likeable and prolific are all words that describe former Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene. Jayawardene played at five Champions Trophies and had a total of 21 innings. It is a big body of work.

In that time, he failed to register a ton ending with a highest score in the competition of 84 not out. With 742 runs at an average of 41.22, Mahela Jayawardene is the second highest run scorer in Champions Trophy history.

1. Chris Gayle (West Indies)

The Universe Boss as he calls himself is one of the greatest white-ball cricketers of all time. With his go-big-or-go-home attitude and a love of clearing the boundary, it is no surprise to find that Gayle is the highest run scorer in ICC Champions Trophy history. With three centuries and a 99 to his name he averages 52.73 at the tournament with a total of 791 runs.

Interestingly, he is not the player with the most sixes in the events history – that honour falls to one of the other players on this list, Sourav Ganguly. While Gayle is head and shoulders ahead of the others on the list in terms of fours hit (he has 101 to his credit), he is only second on the list of sixes hit, with 15. Ganguly managed to clear the rope 17 times.
